INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION FOR REVIEWERS

1.History and Characteristics

Provide a brief history of the institution, a description of its current mission, an indication of its geographic service area, and a description of the composition of the student population. Include a description of any unusual or distinctive features of the institution and a description of the admissions policies (open, selective, etc.). If appropriate, indicate those institutions that are considered peers. Please limit this section to one-half page.

The mission of Florida Gateway College is to provide superior instruction, nurture individual development, and enrich the community through quality higher education programs and lifelong learning opportunities.

Florida Gateway College (FGC) can trace its roots back to 1947, when it opened as a school of Forestry. It later became Lake City Junior College and Forest Ranger School before transforming into Lake City Community College in 1970.

The school continued its evolution in 2010 when it became Florida Gateway College. While the focus remained on education and training, the name change also represented a monumental event for the college as it would begin offering its first baccalaureate programs in the coming years. FGC currently offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Water Resources Management.

Located in Lake City, Florida – the “Gateway to Florida” – FGC’s campus is a short drive from Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville. Its proximity to interstates 75 and 10 makes it easily accessible for students. In addition to Columbia County, where the college is based, FGC also serves four additional counties: Baker, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Union.

FGC has an open admissions policy, though various programs have different criteria for enrollment depending on previous education.

FGC boasts a very diverse assortment of students, ranging from dual enrolled high school students to second-career students. Because of this, FGC offers more than just the traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. class schedule and boasts a robust collection of night and online classes.

2. List of Degrees

List all degrees currently offered (A. S., B.A., B.S., M.A., Ph.D., for examples) and the majors or concentrations within those degrees, as well as all certificates and diplomas. For each credential offered, indicate the number of graduates in the academic year previous to submitting this report. Indicate term dates.

Florida Gateway College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the baccalaureate and associate degree. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097, or call (404) 679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Florida Gateway College. The Commission is to be contacted only if there is evidence that appears to support an institution's significant non-compliance with a requirement or standard.
