Florida Gateway College (FGC) ensures that the program length is appropriate for each of the institution’s educational programs.

FGC offers bachelor’s, associate in arts, associate in science, college credit certificate, applied technology diploma, occupational credit, and certificate of professional preparation programs. Requirements for each degree are published in the college catalog [1]. The interactive catalog is available on the college website.

FGC District Board of Trustees (DBOT) policy 6Hx12:4-03 [2], Award of Degrees and Certificates, authorizes the college to provide instruction and to confer degrees and certificates according to Florida statutes and administrative code rules.

The length of FGC’s educational programs is appropriate. FGC’s programs are developed according to Florida Administrative Code (FAC) Rule 6A-14.030 [3], Instruction and Awards in Florida College System Institutions, which establishes the standard credit hour length for programs offered by Florida College System institutions. FGC’s credit hours and clock hour definitions are in compliance with FAC 6A-10.033 [4].

FGC identifies general education courses, common prerequisites, and other degree requirements for its programs according to Florida Statute 1007.25 [5] and FAC 6A-10.024 [6], Articulation Between and Among Universities, Florida Colleges, and School Districts.

Distance learning courses are incorporated within degree programs. Program length is the same whether courses are completed online or in a traditional on campus setting.

Bachelor’s Degree

FGC’s bachelor’s degree programs are planned programs consisting of at least 120 college credit hours, including foreign language competence and 36 college credit hours of general education coursework in communication, mathematics, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences. The program length is appropriate according to FAC 6A-14.030 and approved by the State Board of Education [7].

Associate in Arts Degree

FGC’s associate in arts degree programs are transfer degrees and the basis for admission to a bachelor’s program. The curriculum consists of 60 credit hours of lower division college credit courses and includes 36 hours of general education coursework. The program length is appropriate.

Associate in Science Degree

FGC’s associate in science degree programs are planned programs of career and technical instruction consisting of lower level college credit courses. The length of the programs is appropriate according to the Department of Education AS/AAS/CCC/ATD Program Length Document [8], and includes at least 15 college credit hours in general education coursework.

FGC’s associate in science degree programs also meet the content, credit requirements, and student performance standards identified in the Department of Education Career and Technical Curriculum Frameworks [9].

Partnership Degrees

FGC is in partnership with Santa Fe College (SFC) and St. Petersburg College (SPC) for three A.S. degrees. Students take the general education courses at FGC. The degree is awarded by SFC or SPC. The college is in partnership with SFC for the Biotechnology and Respiratory Care A.S. degrees and with SPC for the Veterinary Technology A.S. degree.

College Credit Certificate

FGC’s college credit certificate programs are planned programs of career and technical instruction that are part of an associate in science degree. These programs prepare students for employment upon completion. Program length is less than 60 college credit hours and appropriate according to the Department of Education AS/AAS/CCC/ATD Program Length Document.

FGC’s college credit certificate programs also meet the content, credit requirements, and student performance standards identified in the Department of Education Career and Technical Curriculum Frameworks.

*Certificate of Professional Preparation

FGC offers the alternative certificate program through its Education Preparation Institute. This program is a State of Florida approved program designed to assist professionals with non-education bachelor, master, or doctorate degrees prepare to become qualified teachers and to obtain professional state certification. Program length of 21 college credit hours is appropriate according to FAC 6A-14.30.

Applied Technology Diploma

FGC’s applied technology diploma is a program of career and technical instruction that is part of an associate in science degree and leads to employment in a specific occupation. The program length is less than 60 college credit hours and is appropriate according to the Department of Education AS/AAS/CCC/ATD Program Length Document.

FGC’s applied technology diploma programs also meet the content, credit requirements, and student performance standards identified in the Department of Education Career and Technical Curriculum Frameworks.
